Of all of the nine films, Oda Mae Brown was one of the characters I think Black women are likely to identify with. She is a comedic character, witty with her comebacks and quips, embodying the idea of laughing to keep from dying. Author Danielle Fuentes Morgan says that laughter, "...opens up space to acknowledge kaleidoscopic Blackness—the multiple autonomous ways of being Black—that prevents psychic death, or being objectified and flattened." Oda Mae Brown is nothing if not the opposite of a flat character, as we can see simply from still shots of the movie, where she is adorned in loud, bright-colored clothing.
