"[My grandmother] was a singer and she had the passion for it, but she never had the chance. That was the thing that pushed me forward to continue."

Jennifer Hudson is an anomaly within this list of actresses. Dreamgirls was her first role, other than her being a contestant on American Idol, and catapulted her into much success. Her filmography includes the films Sex in the City and The Secret Life of Bees, but admittedly it seems that Hudson was always more interested in a music career. Her self-titled debut album reached #2 on the Billboard 200 and this momentum has carried all the way into modern day, as Hudson coaches shows such as The Voice.
